What is iNaturalist?

iNaturalist is a global data-sharing application whose primary purpose is to engage a wide range of individuals in observing, learning and recording all kinds of natural life, species and the rich biodiversity that surrounds us. The iNaturalist application continues to receive wide-spread use across Canada and will continue to provide us with an ongoing snapshot of our natural world, through photo imagery and integrated biodiversity mapping. We encourage you to visit and experience what iNaturalist can offer you in order to expand or contribute your knowledge of our natural world. Anyone can join the ranks of Citizen Science and become a registered naturalist to contribute and upload your observations and photos. The iNaturalist is a gateway opportunity for everyone to learn about what we see on land and water and collaborate with other nature lovers and professional biologists. iNaturalist is both a research and educational tool for all to enjoy.

How do I use iNaturalist for the Slocan Lake Watershed?

For the Slocan Lake Watershed, a user-friendly interface and portal has been created for local residents and visitors to map their observations. This iNaturalist portal was developed in conjunction with the Selkirk Geospatial Research Centre (SGRC), with support from the Columbia Basin Watershed Network (CBWN). By building our collective and recorded knowledge of the amazing creatures, species and botany found within the Slocan Lake Watershed, we are in a better position to identify species and ecosystems in need of conservation and protection. Every creature, flora, fauna and fungi are of interest and can be recorded through this application.
