_____________________________

This is a friendly reminder from the Slocan Lake Stewardship Society.  We hope you will take a minute or two to hear why it is important to renew your membership at this time.

Protecting Slocan Lake is, as you know, the primary mandate of SLSS, but expanding our membership is critical to show prospective funders and decision-makers the level of support we have to pursue this mandate.  We are grateful for what we have been able to accomplish in the past four years (see the flip side of the attached rack card), including developing good working relationships with many departments and levels of government, but this is just the beginning of our work.

2012 and 2013 will be key years for Slocan Lake and for SLSS.   The Regional District of Central Kootenay has its sights on developing a Lake Management Plan (LMP) for Slocan Lake.   This will take time, perhaps years, to complete.  It  will be an historic opportunity for everyone to offer their input about the future of Slocan Lake.  It  will also be the time for the Slocan Lake Stewardship Society to state loudly and clearly, with the scientific data we have gathered to date and with the strength of our membership, our values regarding water quality, fish and wildlife, and what does – and does not – constitute appropriate development.  So much depends on successful advocacy now.  With your support, we can be a stronger voice for the highest possible standards of protection for this incredible place.  Please join us in our efforts to ensure that Slocan Lake will always be the “Jewel of the Kootenays”.

One of the greatest long-term threats to Slocan Lake is the failure to appreciate the great danger of cumulative impacts. Approving development permits, one application at a time, one Environmental Assessment at a time, without a view to the long term cumulative effects is a sure path to losing the wild, pristine and beautiful lake we know today.   We cannot turn the clock back, 20 or 50 years from now, after the damage is done.  But we can be forward thinking now.  We have an opportunity now and in the year or two ahead to help set the course for the kind of place Slocan Lake will be for generations to come!

In anticipation of working towards a Slocan Lake Management Plan, the RDCK Area H has provided some support for SLSS to develop a campaign which will engage with everyone in this region to identify our communities’ values and visions for the lake.   We have already begun planning a 10-month community-values gathering project, which we have entitled “Imagine Slocan Lake!”.   This campaign will be announced soon.  It will begin with educational and celebrative components and will culminate in a multi-media appeal to our communities to participate in an innovative process of imagining the future of Slocan Lake together.   We are optimistic that our diverse population will find common ground in our love for the lake and even in a sense of duty to protect it for future generations.

For now, we appeal to you to register your support for all of our work by completing the attached membership form and mailing it, along with the membership fee, to the address on the form.

If you do not wish to become a member , or if you would like to be removed from our email list, please reply to this email with a note to that effect.

Our website www.SlocanLakeSS.wordpress.com describes much of what SLSS has done since its inception, four years ago, and much more.  If you have questions, comments, criticisms or suggestions about any aspect of our work, we encourage you to jot us a note from the email address on the website.

Thank you,

Clarence denBok
